What constitutes an effective image of an interior space or architecture?
Fundamentally, clients require representative photos without distortion: Vertical lines that are straight and parallel to the sides of the image, rather than slanting inward. Next, images need to be cheery and bright, rather than dingy or dull. How do you prevent this? By performing a custom white balance and balancing the color of any light added to the scene with colored gels to control color. When white balance is off (e.g., those point-and-shoot photos you see on Facebook in which everything is tinted yellow), then all the colors lose their character: dingy dullness is the result.
Another aspect of effective architectural photos is proper exposure: The space is not overly dark or light, where detail is lost in the shadows or highlights. One notable exception that is popular in commercial imaging right now is the situation in which a room is brightened by over exposure and the windows in the scene are blown out (that is, bright white with no detail showing from outside). So long as this is done without what is known as lens flare, this can be an effective means of showing the space as bright and cheerful. Lens flare occurs, however, when light from that bright source is so intense that it creates distracting reflections from within the lens as it bounces between lens surfaces. One solution to balancing the interior exposure with bright outside light is "flashing" the interior space while exposing the outside properly. A second and even more effective solution involves making multiple exposures and then blending those exposures through layering and advanced masking in photoshop.
Related to exposure is the skill of using lighting or post-processing techniques to balance the shadow and highlight areas of the scene. Many photographers use what’s known as High Dynamic Range techniques to combine multiple exposures of an identical scene into one, using the detail from both ends of the exposure to retain details. Done well, HDR images simply look like what our brain perceives when looking at a high-contrast scene. Done poorly, the scene looks artificial and even “flat.” A second (and more reliable) method of balancing the exposure in an image is that of using off-camera lighting to bring up the shadows, accentuate features we want viewers to appreciate, and narrow the range of brightness values so that the camera can make the image in one exposure. This requires skill in shooting manually, both in camera mode and in lighting control.
For architectural and interior design imaging, I use a top-of-the-line Canon professional camera, “L” series tilt-shift lenses, up to three off-camera flashes, and a tripod. I work closely with the client to understand their requirements and carefully photograph at multiple angles to ensure that the resulting images exceed expectations.
I also have the equipment, software, and skill to create 360º panoramas and Virtual Reality photographs and tours.

We love documenting the work of interior designers! They feel like kindred spirits who beautify our lives! As with architectural work, these clients require accurate representations of their work. Here, the focus is on creating portfolio shots that focus on the details of a room, a shelf arrangement, a mantle display — whatever the large and small touches the designer has created.
Design photography delivers the same fidelity to color and exposure as architectural photography, but with a lean toward highlighting the details. This requires a close collaboration with the designer, who works alongside the photographer during the shoot and throughout the post-processing that occurs afterward. Finished photos may encompass a large space, or they can zoom in on the small design details that the designer wishes to capture and convey. For these projects, it’s imperative to take the time needed for the shot, often requiring multiple exposures, targeted lighting, and multi-layer exposures composited afterward. For this reason, as with architectural photography, the cost of interior design photography addresses the shoot time, the post-processing time, and final image licensing.
For interior design and most real estate imaging, I use a top-of-the-line Canon professional cameras, “L” series tilt-shift lenses, up to three off-camera flashes, and a tripod. I work closely with the client to understand their requirements and carefully photograph at multiple angles to ensure that the resulting images exceed expectations.
Unlike architectural and interior design photography, however, real estate photography often requires tight time constraints that don’t allow for multiple exposures using targeted lighting and complex post-processing. Rather, we shoot bracketed exposures and HDR (High Dynamic Range) software to combine those exposures into a natural, bright look; and we can be in and out of a home very quickly! We charge a single rate for real estate jobs based on the number of rooms photographed. I also have the equipment, software, and skill to create 360º panoramas and Virtual Reality photos and tours.

We offer significantly lower image prices on location office packages and even include group photos. We bring our studio to you and can set up in an open office, conference room, or building lobby. We can also use either a studio backdrop (gray recommended) or an environmental background to obtain the look you want.
We also offer Portrait Day packages in partnership with building management companies or other entities to arrange a date and space for us to set up a studio and they enroll participants from various businesses for web-sized digital images at a discounted rate. Once set up, if the agreed-upon minimum number of persons book, we handle the photography and transactions! Inquire if you are interested, or refer your building manager who may take advantage of this win-win experience!
Before considering the clothing, please talk with Chris about the look you want in your portrait. This will shape the location and background he selects. Clothing must blend well with that background so that the faces draw the attention!
Here are some basic options:
- High Key Portrait: Background and clothing are white, accenting the face.
- Low Key Portrait: Background and clothing are dark or black.
- Mid Key Portrait: Background and clothing are neither light nor dark. Clothing and background colors blend. (White tops draw too much attention from the face in this key.)
- Environmental Portrait: a shot in which nature or a location is the background.
For a single portrait or headshot, please select:
- A long-sleeved shirt or top with a solid and subdued color. Avoid bright colors and patterns, as they distract from the face. Be sure the clothing is pressed and neat!
- A high neckline, turtleneck, or V-neck style. For group portraits, please coordinate your outfits so that everyone blends:
- As with individuals, choose subdued, solid colors. Typically, select a light color for the top and a darker one for the bottom. Everyone should wear the same colors.
- Long sleeves and high neckline, turtleneck, or V-neck style.
- If the plan is for a “low key” image, we will select dark or black shirts or tops. Likewise, if you desire a “high key” image, then white shirts are needed. Discuss this with Chris beforehand if interested.
- Before the shoot, lay the group's outfits out on a bed. If anything jumps out, it is wrong for the portrait.
Hairstyles:
- So that the portrait will have lasting value, please style your hair in a simple, classic way
rather than a trendy manner.- Style to keep the hair off the face (where it can cast undesirable shadows).
- Be careful of styles that produce curls that may be distracting if light shines through them from behind.
Makeup:
- For women, this is a must; but it should be subtle and not draw attention to itself. Use foundation blended to the neck, and avoid different colors between the jawline and the neck. Use mascara. If you use eyeliner, be careful to use it only to add definition, rather than strong color. Wear colored lip gloss or clear lip gloss over lipstick to enhance the lips.
